The five match ban was imposed on Cristiano Ronaldo for pushing the referee after being controversially sent-off the field for diving during the first leg match. The incident overshadowed another glorious night for Real as they are closing on their seventh trophy in less than two years’ time with Zinedine Zidane as their manager.
Fans of Real Madrid are planning to stage a protest during the next leg match against Barcelona. The time when Cristiano Ronaldo was sent-off the field. They were angry with the treatment given to the World Player of the Year.
“When you look at everything that happened, to think Cristiano won’t play five games with us… it is infuriating” said Zidane.
Ronaldo came off the bench to give Madrid a 2-1 lead at the Camp Nou on Sunday with a sensational strike into the top corner. He was shown the yellow card for taking off his shirt whilst celebrating the goal.
Later, he was shown another yellow card forcing him to get off the field. This, in fact, was in lieu for going down under Samuel Umtiti inside the area.
The Portuguese captain then pushed the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea before leaving the field – an offence that carries a minimum of a four-game suspension.
Real Madrid would appeal against the second yellow card, whose hearing would be on Wednesday morning but even it is successful the ban will be likely to be reduced from five to four.
